“Friendship is unnecessary, like philosophy, like art…. It has no survival value; rather it is one of those things which give value to survival.”

Are not the opposite of friends enemies? And are not enemies counter productive to survival?
Humanity is the dominate species on the planet, due to, among others reasons, altruism. And is not altruism a form of friendship?
If enemies are counter survival, I wonder if friendship is pro?

I think friendship would make survival easier.
I dont think ive had an enemy try to kill me… I dont even know if ive had an enemy.
Friendship is a motivator, but I’d say so is the opposition.
As for enemies being counter survival, I wonder what kind of enemies?

I think that the question that deserves asking is that if such things as friendship, art and philosophy are all unnecessary then why do we have a need to find comfort and companionship with others? Why when someone is totally alone or totally deprived of art or entertainment do they go mad? Surely friendship is, therefore, a deep-seated need for the human experience.

Yes, I agree.
We need water and food for our bodily survival.
And maybe friendship is necessary for our mental survival.

First of all, great quote. Thanks.
For me a life without friendship, art, music is mere existence.

That’s a great quote. I personally can’t visualize not having friends to look at art and listen to music with. My best memories of the 70’s were sitting in the basement of my buddies house listening to music and studying the album art
