I always thought the “write what you know” was said because many people often try to write what they know absolutely nothing about, and it shows in their writing. I think he was being sarcastic. If I tell someone to write what they know because that will leave them with a lot of free time, I am telling them that they don’t know very much. I think he was trying to be funny.

It’s not mean. He’s encouraging people to break down barriers, be adventurous and be creative. It may be harshly worded.

I can see that. Maybe I’m just so used to people putting up inspirational quotes that I didn’t even think to see it any other way.

I took it as him poking fun at people who think they know more than they do, so when they sit down to write they discover they don’t.
It’s interesting to see different perspectives on it though.
