Welcome to Book Club.

I thought I’d spice up my blogging life and create a dysfunctional book club. I think it’d be cool of you to join me.
One book a month. I’ll post at the beginning what book and at the end I’ll post a review. (I’m awful at reviews. Really I’ll just talk about the book.) Then we can discuss in the comments.
July’s choice: Angle of Repose by Wallace Stegner
If you want to join me in this virtual community gathering feel free to suggest other books! Or, if you want to just be a spectator…that’s cool, too.
It’s a cool eustress post of yours. Thank you for giving me a priceless opportunity to read it. Thank you.

It’s huge. Take me half a year to read that..
Skimmed the first chapter though; lots of big words. Nice writing..
I did work a guest ranch the other side of the Divide from Leadville in the early 80’s. Leadville looked the dismal mining town.

It’s not that big! Haha. I chose this book because I’ve been meaning to read it over a year now. 😅

Stegner is one of my favorite writers and Angle of Repose is an ambitious grand narrative, full of beautifully wrought prose. I found the protagonist’s physical limitations a bit exaggerated in context. But there were pages so well written, I sat and read them aloud with joy. After reading it, I sat down with All The Little Live Things. Oh, open this one with trepidation, my friends. Do not turn your back on it. Wallace will warn you from the first page to abandon all hope; here comes a tale of woe. Still when the end came, I felt … savaged. If you don’t suspect, as I didn’t, that a craftsman of literary fiction like Stegner is capable of emotional and graphic violence, beware. … But the dude could write, otherwise it wouldn’t have had that impact.

I’ve wanted to pick up another one of his, but I don’t know if I can bare a tale of woe. Angle of Repose gave me enough to last a few months. I tend to keep those emotions with far too long.
