One of my July goals is to get up at 6:30 am.
I’ve tried getting up earlier than that to be able to do my writing in the morning, but I just can’t. So, I’m going to try splitting my time. Writing some in the morning and some in the evening.
However, I’m a rock in the morning. I sleep through my alarms and often wake up to find that my delirious barely (am I really awake?) self turned my alarm off and not on snooze.
This morning I had my alarm set for 6:30 (6:45, 6:57, 7:00, 7:23, 7:38, 7:46, 8:00). Anyone who has trouble waking up may understand the random times.
I managed to get up at 6:50. Baby steps, right?
I grabbed a book off my desk and read first, thinking it would wake me up. (Delirious and delusional in the morning.)
By the time I grabbed my notebook and pencil, I had already decided to work on poetry while laying in bed. So there I was on my stomach, sprawled across my bed staring a blank sheet of paper.
I started falling in and out of sleep while scribbling lines. After 20 minutes I gave up and started getting ready for work. I didn’t read back over those lines, but from what I vaguely remember they had something to do with water.
Maybe this can be a new genre. Delirious writing.
Obviously, writing in bed in the am was a bad idea, I knew that from the beginning. My bed is just too comfortable.
Writing drunk can be wondrous too.

Update: I got home from work and read what I wrote. Trippy is all I can say.

I do my best writing in the morning. But I can’t do it in bed like you mention. I have to get up, shower, make some coffee, put on some music and get at it. I can stay up late and do it also, but that is slow and dragging compared to how the morning is. Writing while refreshed is the best for me. I get on a roll in the mornings. At night I am usually so tired the writing is so sparse that it is usually a waste of time. – Robert

I don’t get up early enough to have time to really get my mind awake before trying to write 😂 but I found today that my evening writing was more fluid than the morning. So I’m thinking splitting my time may actually work for me

My roommate’s like you with her alarms. They go for an hour and a half and she still barely drags her ass out of bed just in time to start work. She’s lucky she works from home and can time in on her phone.
I like writing in bed in the morning. I’ve had days where I’ve had 2,000 words before I get out of bed. Of course, that’s weekend stuff. These days I have to get up, work out, and take the dogs for a hike before it gets too hot.
My favorite time to write is outside during sunset and into the night, under the stars. There’s something inspirational about being outside in the dark by myself. If only the stupid bugs would stay off my laptop screen.
Force yourself to write when you want to write. Eventually, your brain will get that it’s creative time and acquiesce.

Outside during sunset is the time I like to read! Though I do get distracted by the pretty view, my dog, and bugs. Yesterday I found that splitting my time really helped. The morning writing has been a little useless, but by the time I’m doing my evening writing I feel less pressure because I already got all the bad stuff out in the morning. Haha.
Also, I have my mom call me every morning to make sure I got up because I’m scared that I’ll sleep straight through every alarm. I should be embarrassed by that, but her calls have been the reason I made it to work… quite a few times.

Yeah, get the bad stuff out and get the creative juices going. I try not break up my time. I try to get lost in the writing. Distraction don’t always allow that.
In some ways, I’m jealous of of writers who didn’t have internet, tv, video games, phones….
It’s a good thing you don’t sleep through your mom’s wake-up call.

Right! If I didn’t have a cell phone id probably get more done in general.

When I have time, which isn’t often, I take my hammock out to the park to write

😂 Haha, yeah. My writing schedule goes to crap on the weekends too. But I can’t seem to care until Monday.

I get up and go to work an hour early and write before work. A) I gotta get up and go to work anyway. B) By the time I get to work, I’m usually awake enough. C) Driving an hour earlier is nicer because there’s not as much traffic and I probably save a half hour in the commute time anyway. D) The office is quiet that early and there are no home distractions (bed, coffee, tv, video games,) to pull me away. I don’t write on the weekends.. too much to do. This works out well for me, but I can’t tell you whether it makes my writing any better. I like the write while drunk idea. Maybe I’ll try that at work tomorrow. 🙂
